How Far in Advance Should You Book the Maldives?

This may seem like a slightly nuts time to be writing this.  It’s February.  Christmas is a distant memory.  The Maldives should, in theory, be calmly floating around, coming up with some new way of extracting all your income.  Something like a $4,000 dinner where a shark punches you in the balls.

Instead, the requests we’ve had this year have been borderline feral.

February = The Perfect Storm

Not everyone wants to use a travel agent.  I get it.  No harm done.

But a noticeable number of enquiries lately have been from people who don’t actually want to use an agent — they just want to know if we can magically access some secret inventory because the resort has told them “no.”

Here’s the general rule: if a hotel has availability, they will sell it to you.

There isn’t a hidden stash of overwater villas kept behind a velvet rope labelled “travel agents only.” Yes, I may have relationships with a Sales Director or General Manager.  Yes, sometimes that means a helpful nudge on a waitlist.  But no resort is declining confirmed business on the off chance it might upset an agent who hasn’t even made an enquiry.

If inventory exists, they’ll move it.

And while it may feel like the Maldives is launching a new ultra-luxury resort every five minutes — we still have Le K2, Mandarin Oriental, Bulgari, Aman and Rosewood coming, plus that nearly 500-room god-awful Atlantis looming on the horizon — that doesn’t mean endless availability.  It just means the demand is there to justify building them.

Right now it’s Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day and European school holidays.  All neatly stacked on top of each other, like a coordinated assault on your marriage.  The Maldives was meant to be the grand romantic gesture.  The reset.  The last-ditch attempt to save it.  Except you didn’t sort it six months ago.  Now you have a lifetime of living on a sofa and eating microwave meals with a side of tears.

February has almost no availability almost everywhere.  And I’m not even talking about the places people actually want to stay.  I mean everywhere.  

Christmas Is Already Opening

While everyone is scrambling for February, the festive period has quietly opened across most of the Maldives.  And when I say opened, I don’t mean “plenty of space, take your time.”  At places like Cheval Blanc Randheli and Velaa Private Island, festive availability is first offered to their key repeat guests.  Those villas don’t even hit the public system initially.  If those guests decline, then — and only then — does it trickle down to the rest.

By the time many people start thinking about Christmas (usually around September, after someone says “we should do something special this year”), the prime villas are long gone.

So… How Soon Should You Book?

You don’t need to panic book a year out for an October escape.  But, if you’re travelling:

• February’s Perfect Storm: 6–9 months in advance.
• Easter: 6-12 months.
• Christmas & New Year: The moment rates open.  Which is basically now.  But I have definitely seen last-minute availability.
• Random low-season week in June or September: Arrived in Male and just remembered you forgot to book anywhere?  You’ll be fine

The days of deciding in November that you’d quite like Christmas in the Maldives, then casually picking between three villas at your favourite resort, are over.  Unless your favourite resort is “whatever is left.”

If you’re going because it matters — honeymoon, big anniversary, family Christmas, “we need this after the year we’ve had” — book early.  If you’re flexible on timing and flexible on the resort, you’ll usually be fine.  But if you want a very specific villa, at a very specific resort, at a very specific time — assume everyone else does too.  Especially because for now, Cheval Blanc Randheli and Velaa are still the kings of the Maldives.
