The Brief

We were approached by four couples, a group in their mid-50s who wanted to book the shared trip of a lifetime to celebrate their many decades of friendship. Specifically, they wanted to enjoy an Out of Africa-themed safari as it was one of their party’s all-time favourite movies, and because the lady in question also had very specific medical needs we needed to ensure every remote lodge we partnered with was capable of sensitively providing her with exceptional care. We set about crafting an itinerary that explored the settings so beautifully depicted in the film, with accommodation at some of the region’s most accomplished and exclusive properties.

The Journey

  • Angama Mara, Kenya

Our clients began their journey at Angama Mara, an immensely impressive lodge dramatically perched on a 1,000ft-high precipice overlooking the Maasai Mara. In addition to the exceptional safaris if offers, we knew that this property could arrange visits to many of the locations shown in Out of Africa, and we delighted our guests by arranging surprise picnics in some of the film’s most picturesque and significant settings.

Our years-long relationship with the Angama Mara team provided immense reassurance to our clients. We were able to discuss their precise needs and had complete confidence they would be respected and met. We maintained daily contact with everybody and received exceptional feedback: every day the Angama Mara team went out of their way to ensure our group felt as though they were the stars in their own movie.

  • Arijiju, Kenya

After all the excitement and activity of Angama, we wanted to slow things down a bit by arranging a stay in one of Africa’s most spectacular exclusive-use properties: Arijiju in Kenya. This impeccably designed home offers complete privacy and exceptional facilities, including a fantastic elevated infinity pool and tranquil spa treatment rooms.

As our clients liked to vary their days, Arijuju’s fully customised and flexible approach to safaris and activities worked perfectly for them. They could spend as little or as much time as they wanted on game drives (at any time of day), go horse riding, play tennis, or indulge in non-stop massages. Food is of an especially high standard here too, and our strong relationship with the Arijiju team meant we were able to work with them to ensure our clients’ very specific dietary needs were fully accommodated even in this intentionally isolated setting.
