The Brief

We were approached by a well-travelled American family of eight who had never been to Africa. They wanted us to provide an introduction to the continent’s best safari and beach experiences, with guaranteed privacy, access to the most beautiful exclusive-use properties, and support from the most passionate guides and conservationists. After detailed discussions about the family’s tastes and preferences, we created a 15-day itinerary that crossed from Kenya to Tanzania and wowed everybody.

The Journey

  • Ol Jogi, Kenya

A grand, flamboyant 11-bedroom residence that occupies its own 58,000-acre conservancy, Ol Jogi guarantees families a magical safari. Huge, cinematic windows provide unimpeded views and mean guests can see the likes of hippos, warthogs, zebras and rhinos before they’ve even had their morning coffee.

Over their five-night stay here, our family experienced daily games drives and up-close encounters with injured and abandoned animals being cared for at Ol Jogi’s best-in-class conservation project. Back on property, they enjoyed use of their own huge lagoon pool and extensive resort-style spa facilities. Ol Jogi also stands out when it comes to special-occasion dining experiences, and we worked closely with the culinary team to organise surprise one-of-a-kind outdoor meals and unforgettable celebrations for our family.

  • Serengeti House, Tanzania

Our family’s trip to Africa was a long time coming, so for maximum impact we suggested scheduling their trip around the Great Migration. Their base would be Serengeti House within Singita Grumeti’s private 350,000-acre reserve right in the heart of the action in the Serengeti.

Over five action-packed days, our clients were awed during game drives where they observed hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, alongside zebra, gazelles, lions and hyenas – but not a single other person. Back at Serengeti House they had full use of extensive leisure facilities including a gym, pool and tennis courts. Morning yoga sessions were led by a dedicated on-site teacher; in the evenings, the family shared sundowners and stories by the pool-side fire pit.

  • Thanda Island, Tanzania

A paradise private island in a marine reserve off the coast of Tanzania, this away-from-it-all retreat provided our guests with the perfect base for some R&R post-safari. Accessed by a spectacular helicopter journey, the exclusive-use retreat offers superlative snorkelling and diving – expect to see turtles aplenty and hundreds of species of kaleidoscopic reef fish – alongside lazy pool days and relaxing bespoke spa treatments.

But our clients didn’t just stay on the island and take things easy. A cruise aboard Thanda’s elegant yacht Sazi led to a curious pod of whale sharks. Our family jumped right into the Indian Ocean’s warm waters to swim with these gentle giants, for a true bucket-list experience that concluded their inaugural African adventure beautifully.
